1. The Construction Year Guide
2000 and younger These houses meet the latest seismic standard of houses that are built nowadays, so these are perfect for retrofits
Post-1981 (Recommended Target): Houses built after June 1981 meet Japan’s modern seismic standards (Shin-Taishin-Kijun). They generally have safer concrete foundations and stronger framing, making them ideal, cost-effective candidates for a thermal retrofit.
Pre-1981 Properties: Older houses can still be renovated, but they often require significant structural and earthquake reinforcement before insulation layers can be added.
